DIY lockdown photography Day 2

Tip No.2: Capture the story and the details

Yesterday, we discussed finding and using light. Today, let’s talk about capturing the whole moment - the story and the details.

One fantastic way to bring variety to your maternity and newborn images is to think about both the story and the details.

Step back and bring in the characteristics of the room, the story of that moment. This may be the design elements of the nursery, as the parent feeds the baby. It may be an expectant mum in the comfort of her bedroom. Or perhaps, a sibling photograph in big brother's room. Let the environment into the frame, let it guide your story. Be mindful of what you include - the elements that add (the changing table, the full frame of the bed, the nursery rocking chair) and those that distract (the discarded shoes, the delivery boxes, finished bottles) from your moment.

Then, come in close and capture the details. The way dad looks at his new little one or perhaps the teeny tiny details of newborn hands and feet. Capture the curve of the bump and little sibling hands as they explore it.

Take a moment to breathe and slow down before you snap, this will help you consider the whole moment and then the little details to explore further. Come back tomorrow, when we discuss finding our angles - how one moment can inspire many pictures.

Stay safe
